Conclusion
The paucity of research in this very important area of investigative practice is alarming, particularly when considered against the backdrop of MOJ cases. Add to that the importance of decision-making to the gatekeeping function for admission into the criminal justice system and current high-profile examples of failure in relation to rape, domestic abuse, mental health and other vulnerability, then the importance and urgency of research is increased. There is also a pressing need to undertake research in the area of investigative decision-making models to discover answers to some very important questions. Is the NDM suitable for all decisions within policing? Is it appropriate for decision-making within criminal investigations? How does such a model currently assist investigators in decision-making within criminal investigations, particularly those that are of a serious, complex or major nature? And finally, does the notion of a thorough investigation withstand austerity and the need to utilise resources sparingly? What do the public and the authorities want and expect of investigators undertaking so-called minor crime investigations? Should there be a two-tier system relating to models of investigation? If so, how does this link to professionalism and how does this enable progression from a volume crime investigator through to an investigator of serious and complex crime?
